Macha Yao (UK)

Macha Yao is a French British illustrator and graphic designer based in Taipei. Her work is bold, colourful and full of movement. She uses strong shapes and expressive characters to create striking, high-energy visuals.

Her visual language was shaped by childhood boredom and daydreaming: 90s neon signs, forgotten seaside arcades with sun-faded colours, rainy winter afternoons imagining UFOs above the neighbourhood, after-school bike quests with friends and stacks of borrowed comics. That mix of restlessness and imagination still fuels her work today. Macha works internationally across publishing and visual branding, blending illustration with design strategy. She illustrates middle-grade books and magazines for recognised publishers including Bonnier Books, Oxford University Press and Auzou.

As a designer, she develops visual identities for brands that want clarity, personality and instant recognisability, building cohesive visual systems for indie businesses, cafés, kids’ brands and cultural spaces. Beyond digital work, she brings her art into physical environments through murals and window paintings. She collaborates with shops, schools and organisations to transform plain surfaces into bright, welcoming landmarks that people notice and remember.

At the Taipei Illustration Fair, Macha presents limited riso prints, stickers, zines, enamel pins and small original artworks created live at her booth. Macha makes images that spark confidence, creativity and motion. Her work invites people to follow their own momentum, explore what excites them and take up space exactly as they are, unapologetically unique.
When she’s not busy making art, she can usually be spotted dancing on her longboard somewhere in Taipei, or sharing a mango shaved ice with her kids.
